Abstract:

Windspeed differences, wind direction differences, and vertical windshear within the layer from surface to 1 km were compared for two locations, Berlin, Germany and Centreville, Alabama. Seasonal variation of the cumulative distributive function of vertical windshear were plotted. Maximum windshear generally occurred during the winter with the exception that above 99 probability, the windshear in the spring usually exceeded the winter windshear. Vertical windshear was found to increase with increasing surface windspeed up until the 90 to 95 probability range. Wind direction changes associated with extreme windshears were found to be site-specific. For the layer surface to 600m, vertical windshear of greater than 10ms was accompanied by a wind direction change of greater than 60 degrees six times as often at Centreville as compared with Berlin.
