Abstract:

Test firings of a 155mm artillery projectile have shown that its flight performance is affected by small changes in the base cavity configurations. A clear understanding of why these changes affect the flight behavior does not exist. A computational study has been made for the two base cavity configurations flight tested. Flowfield computations have been performed at 0.8 Mach 1.5 using a Navier-Stokes base flow code. The aerodynamic drag components have been computed and the total drag determined. Computed results show differences in qualitative features of the recirculatory flow in the base region. The code predicts small differences in drag between the base cavity configurations.
