Abstract:
The Model Training Program for Reserve Component Units MTP-RC is a computer based training program designed to train and sustain M1 Tank troubleshooting and maintenance skills in the absence of actual equipment. This research evaluated the effectiveness of the MTP-RC as part of a yearlong trial implementation in three RC units. Participating soldiers were administered hands-on pretests and posttests in which they performed actual troubleshooting procedures on M1 tanks. Combined across four MOS, the performance of 35 soldiers improved from a 36 GO rate on the pretest to an 82 GO rate on the posttest. Paper-and-pencil tests were also administered to compare RC soldier performance to soldiers graduating from resident Advanced Individual Training. The results indicated that the technology-based training concept employed in the MTP-RC is effective for training maintenance skills. Plans are being made to convert the MTP-RC to an Electronic Information Delivery System EIDS-compatible format and to develop additional training on other weapons systems using the validated MTP- RC training concept.
