Abstract:

This report presents a theoretical tool and approach for understanding human deception and counterdeception in terms of cognitive processes and related principles of deception. A Cognitive Deception Model CDM is presented which is composed of 8 sections Index, Structure, Characteristics, Principles, Examples, Plots, Tactical Objectives, and Tactics. The cognitive model structure and numbering system provide organization for the principles. The Cognitive Model on which the CDM is based is composed of components such as a central processor, attention mechanisms, memories, sensors, and affectors. A working Cognitive Simulation, included on a diskette, illustrates a computer modeling approach to studying human deception.
