Abstract:

This report provides an independent evaluation of models which have potential use in describing the movement of smoke. Comparison is made between experimental data from two full-scale fire tests and results from several compartment zone models. Because of the nature of the models, focus is placed on their ability ot predict temperature and the depth of the upper hot gas layer as a function of time. While existing models provide reasonable results for simple compartments, it is clear that dynamic modeling must be extended to regions and situations where a simple two-zone model is not appropriate. The work was done in conjunction with the development of the Smoke Movement Analysis part of the Ship Fire Safety Engineering Method. Keywords Smoke, Smoke movement, Computer models, Zone models.
