Abstract:

The usual semiclassical theory of light detection has been demonstrated to be valid only in the absence of feedback from detector to source. A revised theory has been developed that is valid even in the presence of such feedback. Research has begun on the possibility of using various heterostructures including quantum-well devices that might serve as solid-state versions of the space-charge-limited Franck-Hertz experiment.
