Abstract:

Representative data collected by the contractors Swallow floats during the 22-23 April, 1987 deployment near 32.5 deg N, 120 deg W are presented. Results include the 8 kHz acoustic localization ping arrival data, the battery voltage, compass heading, and AGC level measurements, and the three component VLF particle velocity data. The data set is of extremely high quality and it appears to provide a rich source of information on ambient ocean noise in the 1-20 Hz band. Information on two other experiments which were conducted concurrently with the Swallow float deployment are also presented. These experiments involved the deployment of 13 ocean bottom seismometers, operated by Dr. L. Dormans group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the deployment of 8 ship-launched and 12 air-launched expendable sonobuoys. To help interpret the acousticseismic data collected by the three sets of instruments, information on the position and strength of known acoustic sources - the two research vessels, 18 TNT detonations, and a towed, low-frequency sound source - are presented as a function of time. Pertinent environmental data, including sound velocity profiles and wind speed measurements, are presented as well.
