Abstract:

The After Action Review AAR process was analyzed to evaluate the adherence to principles of effective feedback. Principles were identified through synthesis of the feedback literature and organized into three areas feedback sources participation, feedback content, and feedback message structures. Message content analysis was performed on six videotapes from the Army Training Battle Simulation System ARTBASS AARs. The results indicated that both effective and ineffective feedback behaviors occurred. The major ineffective procedure was the AAR leaders infrequent use of the questioning technique to stimulate involvement by the training audience. Other AAR feedback practices are discussed.
