Abstract:

A new method for generating spectral holes was studied. The method used nonlinear four wave mixing to create an excited state population from which relaxation created a hole. After studies to define a suitable system for the experiments, it was found that polymethyl methacrylate PMMA provided a host material where hole burning was extremely efficient. The high efficiency in fact limited the ability to measure the hole. A new technique is presently being developed that can dynamically access the holes created without interference from additional hole burning.
