Determination of the Origin of Self-Pumped Phase Conjugation in Barium Titanate.

When a beam of extraordinarily polarized light is directed through a poled, single crystal of Barium titanate it fans in the direction of the optic axis. This thesis research investigates the origin of this fanning, or asymmetric self-defocusing, in barium titanate. Experimental observations and theoretical simulation suggest that this phenomenon is due to near forward stimulated photorefractive scattering. Additionally, observations of unique variegated beam patterns during phase conjugation are reported, including internally pumped rings and motion invariant patterns.
