The basic processes of indentation damage in brittle ceramics have been studied. Attention has focused on the roles of material crystallography and microstructure in determining the nature of the damage pattern. Microscopy techniques, particularly transmission electron microscopy, have been used to characterize the attendant deformation and fracture of Vickers indentation sites. Strength, toughness, and wear measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline materials to ascertain how the damage characteristics influence the ensuing mechanical properties. It is concluded that material microstructure can be a crucial factor in structural design with ceramics.
