Abstract:

Recently reported observations by others indicates that a combination of a weak dc magnetic field and extra-low-frequency ac magnetic fields can produce resonant effects in biological systems. This study of resonant magnetic fields that consists of two parts 1 calculations aimed at identifying the basic mechanisms underlying the resonance, and 2 measurements designed to determine more specifically how biological systems respond to the resonance condition. A sample model consisting of one charged particle in a viscous medium is used to explain the basic mechanism of biological resonant response to a combination of dc and ac magnetic fields and ac electric fields. The response is calculated from the Lorentz force equation, which in this case is a system of linear differential equations with time-varying coefficients. Since closed-form solutions are not available, trajectories of the particle are calculated using standard numerical techniques. Conditions for instabilities unbounded velocity are calculated from eigenvalues of the system of equations. Numerical values are given for combinations of frequency and magnetic field strengths resonant conditions that produce instabilities. Calculated results illustrate both the frequency window and the amplitude window that have been observed by others experimentally. Explanations based on physical interpretation are given for the fundamental mechanisms underlying both phenomena.
