Abstract:

The theory of sound transmission through internal waves is used to develop a method for determining the geographical distribution of internal-wave strength by acoustic tomography. It is shown that short-term fluctuations of acoustic travel-time can be used to probe low-mode internal waves, whereas fluctuations of arrival angle measured by vertically separated hydrophones will probe high mode internal waves.
