During the course of the data link research at RSRE an experimental phrase source language was devised which followed the pattern suggested for Mode-S in International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO SSR Improvements and Collision Avoidance Systems Panel SICASP. This was published and presented to SICASP Working Group 3 in January 1986 where it was accepted as the basis for the Phrase Source Language PSL to be incorporated in the SARPS Standards and Recommended Practices. Since that time there have been further developments which have arisen from practical study of applications for such a language. In particular it has become apparent that more complex phrases than were first envisaged will need to be encoded and so new features have been suggested. Contents--The Language Design Operator Name Changes, To display Operator Field Value, Output Operator, A Macro Structure, Variable Length Variables, Repeat Loops, Commentary on the VOLMET Example Language Features for Consideration Fixed Bit Position Formats, Machine Readable Variables.
