Abstract:
A forward scatter meter designed to measure the visible extinction coefficient in fog has been tested in falling snow. The comparison of the extinction coefficients measured with a forward scatter meter and a transmissometer indicates that a forward scatter meter can be used to measure extinction coefficient in falling snow. The different calibrations required for snow and fog are partially explained by examining the effect of particle size on the angular distribution of scattered light.
