This grant provided funds for the installation of a geotechnical centrifuge facility, to be used for research in which models for foundations on earth structures are tested in an elevated gravity field so as to provide properly scaled stresses and strains. Some of the key features of this machine are Swinging platforms, Maximum acceleration 200g, Maximum payload coil or rock plus container plus instrumentation and any operating parts 200 lb., Maximum combination 30,000 g-lbs 15g-tons, Maximum dimensions of payload 20 in. x 20 in. prototype horizontal by about 16 in. high, Radius to axle of swinging platform 42 in. typical effective radius to centroid of model about 48 in., 24 shielded electrical slip rings, 4 hydraulic slip rings, A closed-circuit TV viewing system.
