Abstract:
Titanium carbide, Titanium diboride and cermets of these compounds have been synthesized by the Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis SHS process. It has been shown, definitively, that the mechanism of TiC powders reacting to form TiC is the movement of melted titanium to the solid carbon lattice. Extensive porosity in the product is caused by this movement of the titanium but additional voids are formed from the expulsion of contaminant gases during the combustion process. In order to eliminate these voids and porosity in the material, the reacted samples have been compacted up to pressures of 0.41GPA 60Kpsi immediately after the completion of the combustion. These products have results in samples with densities greater than 95 and microhardness approaching values obtained by conventional sintering techniques. Keywords Solid Combustion, Ceramics, Ceramics Processing, Cermets, Titanium Carbide, Titanium Diboride Carbon.
