The Database Design and Evaluation Workbench is a graphics-oriented decision support system for both centralized and distributed database design. A prototype system called the Database Designers Workbench DDW has been implemented on MULTICS and is currently undergoing extensive testing. The prototype is written in PASCAL and LISP, and it contains the basic tools to aid in both the conceptual and implementation logical design stages and for data allocation to nodes in a computer network. It demonstrates the feasibility of the Workbench concept for small database design problems. This paper presents the functional specification for the Database Design and Evaluation Workbench. It is organized about the four major components Methodology, database analysis and design tools, the user interface, and the system architecture.
