Abstract:
Biotoxins of freshwater blue-green algae cyanobacteria are currently classed as being either hepatotoxic peptides or neurotoxic alkaloids. This study is concerned with the examination of toxins from the species Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria agardhii. Areas of investigation include 1 Culture methods for toxic freshwater cyanobacteria, 2 Extraction and purification of toxins, 3 Chemical analysis of isolated toxins, 4 Toxicology and pharmacological effect, 5 Continued field studies of toxin bloom occurrence, isolation and culture and testing of new toxic strains.
