Abstract:

Brazil is the fastest growing country in South America and is in a position to become a dominant power. The key to Brazils success has been its spectacular economic progress, but a success that has been dimmed recently by Brazils struggle with its enormous debt and rising inflation. The Brazilian military is expanding and modernizing and turning its focus from internal to external defense role. Its emergence as a great power in this hemisphere will have important implications for the United States. This paper examines its current economic status, military modernization programs, and foreign and defense policies.
