Abstract:

This report summarizes a range of work, both theoretical and experimental, involving the spectroscopy of the diatomic halogens in the gas phase. Included are 1 Analysis of absorption, fluorescence, and emission spectra -- both discrete and diffuse -- of Iodine Bromine, Chlorine, Iodine Chloride, Iodine Bromide, Iodine Fluoride, Bromine Chloride, and Bromine Fluoride 2 The development of improved computational methods for evaluating diatomic partition functions, simulating spectra, computing centrifugal distortion constants, fitting spectral data to mixed polynomial and near-dissociation representations by the method of least squares, analyzing predissociation data, and calculating total radiative decay rates 3 The determination of the transition moment function for the B-X transition in I2 from very high resolution measurements of absorption by single rotational lines, using a cw dye laser as source and 4 Kinetics studies of the thermal dissociation of the A state of I2 following preparation via excimer laser photolysis of I2 in Helium, Argon, Nitrogen, and Sulfur hexafluoride.
