Abstract:

The need for the inspection of space objects by satellite is identified. The historical and legal context of the inspection satellite is discussed and its implications on the design of the satellite are understood. Systems engineering tools are used to identify the basic design of an orbital inspection satellite. The satellite is partitioned into six major subsystems for analysis. The interactions between subsystem is investigated. An orbital inspection satellite composed of the best systems and supporting subsystems is described. Finally, recommendations for further study and the impact of key decisions are described.
