A project was initiated to determine the metabolic costs of performing selected USAF firefighting activities to 1 collect data representative of the workloads imposed on USAF firefighters, and 2 develop valid laboratory protocols to simulate the physical stresses of firefighting activities. These protocols could then be used to evaluate firefighter protective equipment, e.g., self-contained breathing apparatus and the entire firefighter protective ensemble, under simulated field conditions.
