Abstract:

A microprocessor based Ion mobility spectrometry IMS system which can be used for automatic detection and identification of chemical vapors in the ambient environment is described. The system has been integrated into a compact package which facilitates portability. Reasonable trade offs have been made between field support and performance requirements. For applications where IMS techniques are appropriate, the system provides a cost-effective approach to environmental monitoring. The system has proved to be a very versatile and sensitive instrument for environmental monitoring. When it is coupled to a host computer, flexibility is further enhanced. With the aid of an RS-232C interface, the detectiondiscrimination algorithm can be developed at a remote installation and EPROMs burned later to provide the alarm function. In addition, remote monitoring of instrument status and conditions is possible. The system has been applied as an alarm against only a limited number of vapors to date. However, application to a much broader class of organic compounds is possible. Keywords Portable instrumentation. Reprints
