Abstract:

In the study of the physical interaction of diffracting energy with a medium, two different models are being used. One is the geometrical optics model where energy is assumed to propagate along rays which are the orthogonal trajectories of the moving wavefronts. The other makes us of diffraction theory based on the wave equation. We have been concerned in this research with models of the former type assuming that the wavelength of the interrogating wave is small compared to the size of the scatterers. This report describes a model for tracing rays in an inhomogeneous media that incorporates both normal diffracting waves and GTD rays. Based on this model, a computational procedure is described that iteratively calculates the position of each ray and then estimates a cross section of the object. Finally simulated and experimental data is inverted and images based on these methods are shown. Keywords Diffraction Tomography Microwave Imaging.
