The purpose of this paper is to describe problems and issues concerning Army families that need to be addressed by research. A general conceptual model of the Army-family system is presented as a vehicle both for identifying specific research questions and for emphasizing the systemic context within which these questions must be viewed. At the center of our concern is the relationship between the Army and the family as social institutions. A social institution is a set of interrelated social norms and roles governing behavior in some area of social life. The relationship between these two institutions can be characterized along a dimension ranging from conflict to cooperation. Such cooperation can contribute to family wellness, to retention of trained personnel, and to the readiness and effectiveness of the Army. Keywords Army personnel, Communities.
