Abstract:
The benefits of using thermal barrier coatings for engine applications have been considered. It has been found by a number of investigators that engine efficiencies can be dramatically improved by the use of these coatings. Most of the work done in the past was centered around the use of plasma-sprayed zirconia as the basis of the coating system. Various bond coats, needed for adherence and corrosion resistance, and concentrations of oxide stabilizers have been investigated. It appears that an MCrA1Y bond coat beneath a zirconia coating containing 6 to8 percent yttria as stabilizer is the most promising candidate for heat engine service. Coating adherence during thermal cycling and corrosion resistance of both the coating system and the underlying alloy substrate are of prime importance.
