Abstract:
In an empty halfspace a point source emits electromagnetic waves of fixed frequency and arbitrary polarization. The fields reflected by an imperfectly conducting plane, characterized by a constant, isotropic surface impedance, are determined by means of the geometrical optics approximation. An optimization method is used to compute the surface impedance, which minimizes a given function of the e.m. fields e.g. the average energy density at a given observation point. The properties of the functions to be minimized are studied and a set of numerical results is presented and discussed. Keywords geometrical optics control theory.
