Abstract:
This thesis establishes a methodology for a manager of information systems to use when choosing a local area network LAN for an organizations computer communications. The methodology proposed describes the various decisions about a network that must be made, and the alternatives available. The outcome of the methodology will be a generic set of specifications for a basic communications LAN that the manager can use to find an adequate network. This thesis is designed to introduce prospective LAN purchasers to LAN concepts and problems, and to give them a grasp of aspects of LAN technology that need to be considered before a LAN can be purchased. It is not a detailed guide to network engineering and implementation. This thesis speecifically addresses the major elements topology, media, transmission and access of the basic communications LAN. The higher level attributes of a LAN including applications, control and outside interfaces are not included. Author
