Abstract:
The objectives of the Failure Analysis for Composite Structural Materials program are to develop analytical and diagnostic techniques that can be used for determining the causes of failure in composite materials and to incorporate these results into a compendium of procedures which may be used as a reference manual when conducting a postfailure analysis of a composite structure, given the failed part as the starting point of the investigation. Such techniques include flowcharts describing the logical arrangement of investigative operations along with diagnostic procedures that will reveal the cause and mechanism of failure. To achieve these objectives, this program is divided into five tasks. Literature search and diagnostic technique selection specimen production and test diagnostic technique evaluation creation of a failure analysis compendium and evaluation and demonstration of techniques.
