Abstract:

While scholars in the field of business policy wrestle with the strategic management paradigm, their colleagues in organization theory continue to grapple with the complexities of the open system approach to the study of organizations advocated by Thompson. As each body of knowledge continues to expand, the boundaries between the two are becoming increasingly blurred with authors in both areas addressing similar issues. As Bourgeois notes, conceptualizations may be different across disciplines, but this does not rule out integration. Both Thompson and Mintzberg explore the impacts of size, technology and environment on organization structure. Conceptually the notion that structure follows strategy is not essentially different from strategic choice as an intervening variable between the environment and structure. Perhaps this explains the recent shift towards more integrative, interdisciplinary approaches to the study of organizations. Traditionally, organization theorists have addressed the complex issue of organizational effectiveness, while those in the field of business policy and strategic management have focused on quantitative measures of corporate performance such as profitability, market share and ROI.
