This briefing report provides information on the net income of office-based physicians by specialty such as neurosurgery or radiology and the percentage of their gross earnings derived from the Medicare program. It was requested by the former Chairman, Subcommittee on Health, House Committee on Ways and Means, who also asked us to provide information by specialty on 1 The extent to which such Medicare income was generated by services provided in physicians offices or in a hospital setting 2 The extent to which such income involved assigned and unassigned claims and 3 The amounts of physicians gross Medicare income in various increments from less than 10,000 to 100,000 and above. This briefing report is based principally on 1 a review of various published material showing physicians net and gross incomes and the portions coming from Medicare and 2 our analysis of the claims payment history tapes from the tapes include the amounts of Medicare income generated by various places of service, amounts submitted and allowed on assigned and unassigned claims, and relative ranges of physicians gross Medicare income.
