Abstract:

The research of the generalship of General John Miller was undertaken along two paths--i.e. a search of historical records on him as an individual, and the study of the commissioning process of officers during the revolutionary period. It was our belief that through these areas we would not only be able to trace the historical background on General John Miller, but also understand how he might have received his commission. The research did reveal much about the individual, John Miller, and it did disclose much about the commissioning process. Our understanding of that process and the records available in the National nad Pennsylvania Archives have led us to the conclusion that John Miller held no legitimate commission as an officer in the Continental Army or the Pennsylvania Militia.
