Abstract:

The three protein components of anthrax toxin can be safely produced and separated from each other using newly developed conditions for growth of Bacillus anthracis and recovery of culture supernatant protein. Growth of the avirulent Sterne strain in a 50-liter fermentor yields up to 500 milligram of the protective antigen component. Detailed analysis showed that this protein has a small degree of heterogeneity caused by proteolytic nicking and by a second unknown mechanism that produces species differing slightly in charge.
