The production of negative hydrogen ions in a discharge is greatly enhanced if the hydrogen is vibrationally excited hydrogen. In the work presented here is a study of a method of producing vibrationally excited hydrogen. The technique used is to heat dense hydrogen hot enough to produce vibrational excitation and then allow it to expand thus cooling it while maintaining the vibrational excitation. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results on this technique are presented.
