Abstract:

The thermal decomposition of several nitrogen containing aromatics on Pt111 results in desorption products of H2, HCN and C2N2. C2N2 from triazine decomposition desorbs at 740 K which is the same temperature for C2N2 desorption following adsorption of cyanogen. All of the other aromatics evolve C2N2 at a significantly higher temperature 800-990 K which corresponds to the onset of decomposition of the dehydrogenated aromatic ring. The similiar temperature for C2N2 production from triazine and cyanogen indicates that a macrocyclic model of the Beta state of cyanogen adsorbed on Pt111 which has been previously suggested is likely.
