Abstract:
The goal of this project was to develop an inexpensive, self-contained system of hardware and software to support the development, administration, and evaluation of computerized adaptive tests. Toward that goal, commercial hardware was selected and a comprehensive software system called the MicroCAT Testing System was developed. The MicroCAT system was implemented in a local area network configuration at the Basic Electricity and Electronics School of the Naval Training Center in San Diego. It was integrated into the schools computer-managed instruction system and made available to the University of Illinois for research on adaptive diagnostic testing. In response to suggestions from users at this and other non-government implementations, the MicroCAT system was refined into a marketable commercial product.
