Abstract:

Development of an economical and analytical tool for determining and analyzing the response of a beam resting on a ground surface has been the aim of this study. This was accomplished by a simple mechanical soil model used to formulate the responses of the beam and the ground surface. The two parameters of this model can be defined from the information of the soil profile alone for any of the more complex profiles. From this mechanical soil model, analytical expressions were obtained for responses of the beam lying over a ground surface and subjected to vertical loads. These expressions were then codes into the computer program, 2PARM. The results were compared with computed results obtained by a finite element method. The study has maintained that this model and computer program can well predict the responses of the beam bearing on the surface of an elastic homogeneous medium.
