Abstract:

The time dependent far field for electromagnetic and acoustic propagation. One can prescribe the far fields and give the initial conditions which will yield these far fields. Among the far fields which can be prescribed are fields which occupy small distances in space and time, and termed bullets. They can be used for secure communications, medical diagnosis and new types of radar and sonar. Imploding waves can also be prescribed as far fields. These results can be combined with the inverse source problem to give currents and sonic sources which gives arbitrary signals. Recently the problem of finding requirements on the time dependence of the sources which lead to sources which can be contained in prescribed volumes has been investigated.
