Abstract:

The effects of a history of prior straining on subsequent cyclic behavior are studied for a 316 stainless steel at room temperature. The main features of the experimental results are cyclic hardening on quenched material and cyclic softening on cold-worked material. The possibilities of description of the experimental results within the framework of the plasticity theory based on internal variable concepts are discussed. The introduction of a new internal variable taking into account the influence of a prior straining allows us to represent both the fast cyclic hardening for the quenched material and the slow cyclic softening for the cold-worked one with only one set of material coefficients.
