Abstract:

This report summarizes several experiments investigating the impact of mental models and cognitive consistency on userexpert system interaction. Results indicate that userexpert system combined problem solving performance significantly improves if the user has a good mental model of expert system processes. Furthermore, cognitive consistency between the user and system problem solving procedures only degrades performance in situations where users do not have a good mental model.
