Abstract:

Evaluation of advanced navigation systems is part of ongoing simulator research at CAORF. This experiment evaluated the precision navigator pre-nav display system in the restricted waters of Sandy Hook Channel. Both analog and digital displays were used. Test subjects operated in two navigational modes visual-only and visual with precision navigator. Results showed the effectiveness of the pre-nav system under conditions of degraded aids-to-navigation, and demonstrated the advantages in track-keeping over the visual-only mode. In addition, test subjects made several recommendations for improving the safety of navigating in the Sandy Hook Channel under adverse conditions. Several suggestions were made for improving the current aids-to-navigation configurations until such time as pre-nav system is available for shipboard use. Keywords include Advanced Marine Displays, Navigation, Human Factors, Ship Controllability, Simulation, and Pre-nav.
