Optical Studies of Electrical Discharge-Liquid Propellant Interactions.

In the course of investigating the ignition of liquid propellants by electrically initiated plasma discharges, it became clear that a number of complex and important processes were taking place within the reaction chamber, commonly called a plasma plug. This report describes the development of transparent plugs that permit optical access to the reaction chamber, and optical and electronic systems for high speed cine schlieren, shadow, and direct photography of events taking place within the cavity. A number of observations are presented and briefly discussed that demonstrate the power and versatility of the equipment.
