Abstract:

Excimer fluorescence is used to study the morphology and kinetics of phase separation in the polystyrenepolyvinyl methyl ether blends as well as in related blends containing either polystyrene or polyvinyl methyl either. Photophysical models are developed to describe one-dimensional and three-dimensional energy migration processes in miscible and immiscible blends. Experimental measurements of the kinetics of phase separation were found to agree with theories of spinodal decomposition due to de Gennes and Pincus. Fluorescence is shown to be sensitive to the influence of solvent casting conditions on the morphology of the resulting polymer blends. Phase separation in methyl cyclohexane solutions of polystyrene is also examined and described satisfactorily using the same photophysical model developed for the solid polymer blends. Synthesis of probe polymers containing fluorescent groups at the chanin ends is described as a means of determining the end-to-end distances from fluorescence depolarization measurements.
