A facility was established to evaluate the magnetic signatures of cryocoolers, i.e., small closed-cycle liquid helium refrigerators, by use of a superconducting SQUID gradiometer. This gradiometer also was utilized to study the 1 threshold of Barkhausen emission and onset of hysteresis in iron, 2 detection of defects in metal pipes by remote sensing, and 3 magnetoelastic behavior in steel bars.
