Abstract:
It was found that an electron in an evacuated dewar, falling under the influence of gravity, experiences a net force of 10-5 to 10-7 Vm from 300 to about 4.5 degrees-K. At 4.5 degrees-K there is a transition to a net force of zero to within 6 x 10-12 Vm. This effect has been traced to the creation of a 2-D surface plasma of free electrons on the walls of the copper free-fall tube at the transition temperature.
