The results obtained during the investigation of a method of joining silicon nitride with an oxide glass are described. Joining methods for silicon nitride to ceramics and metals are reviewed in Appendix A. Chemical interactions between Si3N4 and glass are described in Appendix B. Both hot-pressed and a hot-isostatically pressed Si3N4 were used for joining experiments. The vaporization behavior of the materials as determined by mass spectrometry is described. A new method of joining Si3N4 which uses very little glass and which has potential for producing joined pieces which retain their strength to high temperatures was developed and preliminary results are presented.
