The purpose of this program was to make a major advance in the theory of interfaces. The contact consisted of support for the purchase of computing facilities and personnel to carry out such a program. It has become apparent in recent years that interfaces are probably the most important and least understood of the basic physical and chemical structues that occur in modern device physics. Most new and many old devices have properties that are controlled by interfaces. The possibilities for the fabrication of new and exciting heterojunction devices are governed by what interfaces can be formed in nature and what their properties are. Keywords Quantum chemistry Silicon oxidation Cations Chemisorption Aluminum Gallium arsenides Schottky garriers and heteroepitaxy.
