Abstract:

CCITT is actively working toward the standardization of Group 4 facsimile. One of the key elements of this CCITT recommendation shall be the compression algorithm for encoding the transmitted facsimile signal. A preliminary standard for this coding technique has been established consisting of and extension of the Group 3 Modified READ Code MRC. Several investigators have studied a class of more advanced compression techniques which recognize recurring patterns such as textual characters and transmit a short ASCII-like code to represent such a symbol. The compression for this type of coding algorithm exceeds that for the basic Group 4 algorithm by a significant degree. Since these compression techniques normally require an error free environment, which is available in Group 4 Facsimile, ATT has submitted a specific proposal Appendix B to the CCITT for the design of such a pattern recognition coding technique. The purpose of this effort was to simulate and evaluate the ATT proposal. Keywords include Facsimile Compression algorithm and Pattern recognition.
