Large-area 100-400sq cm, short-pulse approximately 1 microsec planar surface discharges were produced across various polymer dielectric substrates and in several gas environments at pressures up to several atmospheres. THe dependence of radiative behavior upon electrical driver parameters was investigated and criteria for obtaining spatially homogeneous, coalesced discharges were developed. Applications for excitation of laser media are reviewed.
